We’re Baaack!

2013 April 14
by Linda J. Pugliese

Lions for Hope is a team again for the 2013 City of Hope Walk for Hope to cure women’s cancers.  Last year we raised over $6,000.  Our goal this year is to surpass this AND to be NO. 1!  Gallo, watch out…

Having just come back from our annual bus trip to City of Hope for Lions Appreciation Day and tour of the facilities, it never fails to energize us after hearing all the progress they are making in research and treatments.  If anyone will find a cure for women’s cancers, it will be City of Hope, an institution near and dear to Lions all over the state of California and beyond.

More info to come about organizing multiple walks to maximize our efforts, but of course, in our area we will have our walk along the Guadalupe Creek Trail as we did last year, only going north along a more scenic, less concrete jungle route and ending at the Italian Festa.  We thoroughly enjoyed the food, the music, the church service, and the fun games and vendors.

Walk – done! Fundraising – continuing…

Well done – 31 hearty souls walking along the Guadalupe River Trail on a Saturday morning to show support for City of Hope.  Great team of ladies and gentlemen.  We’ve raised over $4,000 and well on our way to our goal of $5,000.  We had a mini drawing for those who gave up a Saturday morning – and afternoon at the Italian Festa.  Our big drawing will be held within the first two weeks of October for LION KING tickets, $100 gift certificate to Nordstrom’s, $100 gift certificate to The Grill, two $25 gift certificates to Maggiano’s, two tickets to the Oakland A’s 2013, Bratz Hope dolls, as we continue to raise money for City of Hope, Women’s Cancers-Women’s Cures.

You have the power to make a difference in the lives of women all over the world.  Every year, too many women we love must battle breast and gynecologic cancers: our mothers, our wives, our sisters and our friends. We walk for them — and for a future where cancer can no longer take them from us.

Inspired by this vision, City of Hope is leading the fight against cancers unique to women through research, treatment and education. By walking, we not only raise funds for the fight — we also promote regular exercise, which can cut cancer risk and help women with these diseases enjoy longer, healthier lives.

Keep on keepin’ on, Lions for Hope!

After the walk . . . fun, food, music, wine tasting, arts, crafts at the Italian Festa!

We have some great raffle prizes, courtesy of City of Hope. Tickets to the zoo (we are Lions after all) and other surprises. We have three Bratz Hope dolls. These bald and beautiful Moxie Girlz & Bratz dolls are MGA’s new “True Hope” dolls. Like children in cancer treatment who receive beads of courage, each doll comes with their own beaded bracelet.

Many more donations are coming in, but the Grand Prize is two orchestra seat tickets to Lion King at the Orpheum in San Francisco, donated by CRS Court Reporters. Raffle tickets are 3 for $15 and 5 for $20. 100% of the proceeds will be donated through the Lions for Hope Team to City of Hope. Contact

Route and Distance

2012 July 30
by Linda J. Pugliese

The 5K Walk/Fun Run route begins at Guadalupe River Park & Gardens, adjacent to HP Pavilion at Julian and St. John, Downtown San Jose, follows the Guadalupe River Trail to the Children’s Discovery Museum and loops back to the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens.  Plenty of park benches to sit and enjoy the scenery and Leos to point the way.  We will even have some SJPD officers in full bike uniform riding the route to ensure safety.

We start at 9:30 a.m. and City of Hope personnel will be there to speak to us about the progress being made at City of Hope.

Event Day Festivities
We end the walk at the park where the Italian Family Festa will just be starting at 11:00 a.m.  Now in its 32nd year, the Italian Family Festa has evolved and flourished drawing over 25,000 attendees annually.  There you will enjoy live continous entertainment, wine tasting, grape stomping, bocce, and lots of arts and crafts.  A nice way to spend the rest of our day after supporting City of Hope in their quest to eradicate women’s cancers.  Admission is free and parking is free.

Lions for Hope 2012

2012 July 30
by Linda J. Pugliese

This is my 6th year of being the Team Captain for Lions for Hope and my 9th year of fundraising for a cure for cancer ever since my husband Joe’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Joe and I are blessed that she is a survivor and we want to do everything we can to make a difference in the fight against ALL women’s cancers.

More than 275,000 women will be diagnosed with breast or a gynecological cancer this year. More than 25% of those women will die from these diseases. I want to save these women. I want to help City of Hope researchers find cures.

Walk for Hope this year will be a “virtual walk,” meaning that it will take place in our own community on a date of our choosing. This also means that our fundraising efforts go toward actual research and not toward the expenses of organizing a walk.

So for the Lions for Hope team I choose August 26 at 9:30 in Downtown San Jose for a leisurely 3-mile river walk, finishing at the Italian Festa where we can soothe our tired feet by stomping on grapes (yes, really) or playing bocce or listening to Italian music while eating a meatball sandwich and cannoli or tasting local wines.

Raffle prizes! Including a chance to win two Orchestra seat tickets to Lion King at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco! City of Hope speakers!

Walk For Hope has one mission – curing women’s cancers. Walk for Hope is more than a fundraising walk — it is a movement. More than 20,000 women and men will come together this year from coast to coast to raise funds for this movement.

Please support me and City of Hope’s work. Small donations add up to make a big difference. Just hit the big “Donate” button — you can’t miss it — and make a tax-deductible donation. It’s that easy and it’s that important.

I’m in. Are you?
